Ratio of Slaves to Free WomenHere are relevant references from the Books where the ratio of slaves to Free Women is mentioned. I make no pronouncements on these matters, but report them as I find them. Arrive at your own conclusions. I wish you well, Fogaban Tharna is one of the few Gorean cities in which the great majority of its women are enslaved. Normally only about one in forty or so Gorean women in the cities is enslaved. "Are most Gorean women slaves?" she asked. "No," I said. "Indeed, statistically, in those parts of Gor with which I am familiar, very few. Commonly only one woman in, say, forty or fifty is a slave. This varies somewhat of course, from city to city. The major exception to these ratios is the city of Tharna, in which almost every woman is a slave." I looked at her. "There are special historical reasons for that," I said. "But over a large population," she said, "there would be literally thousands." "Of course," I said. "I shall not expatiate on what manner of place this is," said Ginger, "for you, yourself, shall soon learn, and well. And this is not how they treat all women. Women on this world, most of them, enjoy a status and freedom of which you, from Earth, cannot even conceive. Their raiment is splendid, their station is loft, their mien is noble, their prestige is boundless. Dread them, and fear them." Bondage for a beautiful woman, such as yourself, is a common reality on Gor." "I gather that it is so," she said. "It is," I said. "On Gor thousands of beautiful women, branded, and in collars, serve, and must serve, their masters with the fullness of their female perfections." "I am not familiar with Gorean brands," she said. "Yours is a common slave brand," I said. "It marks most property girls. You share it with thousands." I know now, of course, as I did not earlier, that there are many free women on Gor, and, indeed, that most women on Gor are free. An exception seems to be a city called Tharna. I do not know why that is the case. The great majority of women on Gor are, of course, free women, of many diverse castes. On the other hand, female slavery is common. One sees them in the streets, in the markets, in the fields, and so on. Few slaves, statistically, are obtained from the slave farms. Most were originally free women, obtained by capture, in raids, by abduction, in war, and such. Most of the women were free, but some slaves were also in evidence, approximately one slave to every fifteen or twenty free women. |
